For students who, for financial or personal reasons, cannot live on campus, or simply outside it (Westwood is one of L.A.s priciest neighborhoods), the Universitys BruinHub can provide safe, comfortable storage. Dana Kuff, who serves as the director of CityLAB, which was key to researching students commutes and designing the space, said the BruinHub adds to the continuum of housing UCLA is able to offer. Late last month, UCLA unveiled BruinHub, the Universitys new housing complex.
Over the past few years, campuses began setting aside designated spaces for commuter students, who can end up stuck on campus for hours at a time. As cars get larger, cities generally react by increasing the minimum width and length of required parking spaces to allow drivers to open the doors of their larger vehicles safely and conveniently, without damaging adjacent vehicles finishes on parking lots. When cities demand more parking than developers are willing to volunteer, the result is a subsidy for cars relative to other modes of transportation.
If planners assume everyone goes everywhere by car, and cities demand sufficient parking to accommodate the highest peak demand for a parking spot in each use of land, then things get spread out too much so most people have to walk wherever they want. If auto ownership looks the same outside of America as inside, then we need 4.7 billion vehicle spaces on the planet.
A higher price per hour is not an issue if you are parking for just a short period or splitting parking costs between multiple people in a vehicle. Some residents who previously parked at curbside would park on street level, while others may sell a used vehicle not worth the cost of the parking permit. If you’re consulting with a mayor, think about what policies would be recommended to require parking on the streets, thereby driving up car demand, discouraging transit use and walking, causing air pollution, and building an urban design based on a parking-free zone.
Many savvy riders have ditched personal cars entirely for lighter-duty electric vehicles such as e-bikes and e-scooters. Personal vehicles such as bikes, electric bikes, electric scooters, and motorbikes have seen an explosion of popularity in the United States over the past several years because of personal vehicles like bikes efficiency over cars. A six-year UCLA study found these lighter vehicles accounted for a higher percentage of injuries.
Welcome to a deliciously weird panorama from University Parks Velaslavasay. A little bigger than the one Alex Spanos erected for the NFL team that used to be here – or, if you prefer, The Judases. The Pac-12s most historically great football (USC) and basketball program (UCLA) are, to put it bluntly, left out to dry, even though getting that dry is good (numerically challenging, but TV-rich, will double the amount that USC got).
On a recent road trip to UCLA, I got to check it out, and I can report that just five sleeping pods are serviceable and extremely comfortable. In fact, I am looking at formally requesting one for The Times offices when we fully open.
