Like at some other schools profiled by Streetsblog in this series, getting students to leave their cars is not much of an issue at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, because so many of them live on campus. Faculty members are most likely to commuting by car: About 40% of them do, compared with around 20% of non-faculty employees and nearly none of students. In all, about 20 percent of everyone who walks onto the MIT is campus each day does so by themselves, by car.
Carpool members pay reduced parking fees, and there is no annual fee to park at MIT. An MIT-sponsored member pays no application fee, no security deposit, and only $35.00 in annual fees. MIT pays a $100 monthly subsidy to each rideshare-group member.
The insurance costs may be charged on an MIT travel card or paid out-of-pocket and reimbursable. If the car is rented through another agency besides Avis or Budget, and the insurance is indeed purchased, then the rental agents cost of the insurance is personal liability for the rental driver (MIT does not reimburse the cost of car rental insurance).

All insurance (including liability insurance and collision damage waiver–CDW [physical loss] insurance) must be waived if you are using your rental vehicle on MIT business.
If a business number for MIt is NOT provided when renting, coverage will NOT be placed, and the $1,000 deductible on claims will be placed. The Department will be responsible for paying the claims directly to the insurance company. If you fail to confirm a reservation for at least seven days, the company should be able to recalculate your vehicle transport costs from Florida to Massachusetts.
